Coming Soon-Ish: Gods, More Gods, And Then . . . Eddie Murphy?

Here are your trailers (or images) for the week:

Gods Behaving Badly

Nelsan Ellis as Dionysus

I read this book a couple of years ago. It’s an enjoyable, easy enough read about the Greek gods living in modern day London, bored out of their minds and slowly losing their powers. The upcoming adaptation appears to have hopped continents to America, and the cast includes Nelsan Ellis, Alicia Silverstone, Sharon Stone, John Turturro, Oliver Platt, Edie Falco, Aasif Mandvi, Phylicia Rashad, and motherfucking Christopher Walken as Zeus. Zeus.

I have no idea when this will be out (I think it’s still filming), but I’m relatively certain that I’ll see it. Christopher Walken as Zeus.

Bwahahaha.

American Horror Story

This is one of several bizarre teaser trailers for FX’s new show, American Horror Story. The plot line does absolutely nothing for me . . . something to do with an unhappy married couple moving to a haunted house . . . but I would like to see more horror on the small screen, and Tim Minear’s a considerably talented writer (Firefly, Dollhouse, one of my favorite episodes of Terriers), which makes this at least worth checking out. Created by Ryan Murphy, American Horror Story stars Dylan McDermott, Connie Britton, Jessica Lange, Frances Conroy, and Denis O’Hare.

Tower Heist

I’m not sure if I’m going to see this one or not . . . but considering it’s the first Eddie Murphy movie I’ve been even mildly interested in for about a decade, it’s worth putting up. (Oh, fine. I liked the first two Shreks and I’m sure Dreamgirls is very good. I just never need to see it.) Tower Heist kind of reminds me of Ocean’s Eleven, but with less A-listers, more incompetence, and more revenge. I love Alan Alda to bits, and Matthew Broderick has a few lines in this trailer that make me laugh, so . . . maybe. Probably a rental, though.

Apollo 18

The Blair Witch Project on the moon. Yeah. No thanks.

And finally . . . Immortals

Another movie with Greek gods! Yay!

I suspect Immortals might end up being one of those movies that’s visually gorgeous yet also a total suckfest . . . but I can’t help but be intrigued. Some of those shots looking like fucking paintings. Probably worth seeing in theater, for the visuals if nothing else.

  1. Immortals is another movie showing the unfortunately influence of 300. Cheeseball, slo-mo fights, and that sort of muddy, hazy Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” computer generated sets.

  2. I’m really intrigued by the promo clue videos that FX has released over the past few days. It looks both incredibly creepy and incredibly deep. I cannot wait to see how Tim Minear expounds on the plot details already released. And I cannot wait to see who, or what, the hell Rubber Man is…
