Coming Soon-Ish: Ghosts, Male Strippers, and The End of the World . . .

Let’s get to it, shall we?

The Hunger Games

Like many teaser trailers, this one’s a little disappointing because it shows you . . . well . . . not very much. Jennifer Lawrence runs a bit. Arrow shooting. Some general peril. Hopefully, the full-length trailer will actually give a better feel for the story itself.

In the meantime, I’m still excited. If they don’t fuck everything up by making Katniss’s character whiny and awful, I think this movie could be pretty damn awesome.

Prometheus

I’ll admit, I wasn’t very interested in this movie when I first heard about it, like, last year. Prequels are kind of a hard sell, anyway, and not being a big fan of Alien . . . well, I just couldn’t get too excited about it.

But then I heard Prometheus had sort of transformed more into its own movie, rather than a prequel, and when I saw the cast . . . Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Ben Foster, Patrick Wilson, and Noomi Rapace? Yeah, I’m feeling a little more into it.

Fireflies in the Garden

This is the second trailer I’ve seen for this movie. The first one was so muddled that I was confused on the basic premise. This second one started out sort of darkly promising—like a dysfunctional family story leading to a inevitable, bloody end—but when the tone switched with a sudden insurgence of Inspirational, We Can Be A Family Again music . . . I was like, dude, I’m out. Not even for this cast.

The Orphanage

Yes, this movie has already been made. I reviewed it here. But now an American remake is in the works, with Guillermo del Toro again looking to produce.

I am not wild about this news. It’s not that American remakes can’t work, just that this movie was only made a few years ago, and also, it’s already kind of excellent. I know a lot of people who aren’t crazy about subtitles, and I feel bad for them—they’re not all lazy bastards who absolutely hate reading—but I’m almost positive that something is going to be lost in translation if they do a straight remake, and if they change stuff . . . I just don’t think I’m going to like it.

The best thing I can say about this movie is that Amy Adams is rumored to be attached. That’s good, at least. I might at least attempt it for Amy Adams.

Melancholia

I suspect that this will be a beautifully shot, well acted movie that I will despise.

Locke and Key

This isn’t coming to you soon-ish, or ever. Sorry. This is only for people who want to be depressed about the TV shows they won’t be seeing this fall. I was really looking forward to this one, and against all better judgement, I watched the trailer and got even more depressed. So I thought I’d do what any good blogger likes to do: share the misery! You’re welcome!

Finally . . . Magic Mike

This movie is about male strippers. Here are some of the actors who are involved.

Channing Tatum

Joe Manganiello

Matt Bomer

Yes. I will see this movie. I have no shame. At all.
