Coming Soon-Ish: Guardians of the Galaxy

Just one trailer for you today, and it’s the first one for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

I fully plan to see this movie in theaters — cause, you know, superheroes in space, plus Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Lee Pace, Djimon Hounsou, etc. — but until today I’ve been a little wary of it. Probably because talking raccoons throw me right the hell out. Honestly, talking animals of any kind in superhero stories tend to throw me right the hell out — in all the episodes I watched of Justice League, never did I ever take Gorilla Grodd seriously. And he was voiced by Powers Boothe! You don’t get more villainous than that, do you? (For some reason, the giant talking tree doesn’t bother me as much. I have no real rationale for this, except that maybe I can accept Groot as a tree-like alien, whereas it’s hard for me to see Rocket Raccoon as anything but a raccoon. Er, he is supposed to be an alien too, right?)

Anyway, I actually just got my first introduction to the Guardians last week — both in Brian Michael Bendis’s Avengers Assemble and in an episode of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes — and I wasn’t really feeling them, certainly not our lead hero, Star-Lord, who seemed awfully bland. However, this trailer seems to have a lot more quirky humor — and hilarious music — than I anticipated, and I’m actively much more interested in the movie now. I kind of forgot, too, that James Gunn wrote and directed this, and if anyone’s going to make me like a gun-toting raccoon in space, it’s probably going to be the guy who directed Slither and Super.

Opinions are possibly subject to change after actually hearing Bradley Cooper’s voice as Rocket Raccoon, but so far, I’m into it.

  1. Okay, this looks like it could be fun, I like the cast members I know (so *this* is what Chris Pratt got ripped and Karen Gillan shaved her head for!) and I have both Slither and Super on DVD. I’m in.

A bunch of comments on The AV Club were comparing it to Farscape. Which I can only sort of see, but then, I’ve only seen the first season.

  2. I wasn’t into this one at all because Guardians of the Galaxy wasn’t one of my comics, but they got my attention at the 34 second mark because that’s exactly the reaction I had to the idea of Guardians of the Galaxy in the first place: Who?

Green chick at .56 didn’t hurt because green chicks (for reasons that should be obvious for people who know me), but I was still mostly unimpressed because, as I said at .34: Who?.

At the 1.21 through 1.31 mark they made me giggle. I have that machine in my house. It’s so unpredictable you never know when it’s going to go off.

Adding Blue Swede at the 1.33 mark (1.46 for full sound) was pretty much them extending a hand and offering to help me aboard the trip they wanted me to take.

I didn’t actually decide to buy the ticket for that trip until 2.08-2.09. That’s when I knew I was forking over money for the whole ride. What a bunch of a-holes.

  3. never did I ever take Gorilla Grodd seriously

You know, it’s funny, apparently a gorilla has an erect penis length of 1 inch. I wonder how they weren’t always ripping on him for that.
