“Manners Maketh Man.”

The internet provides many things we once found elsewhere: rants, recipes, porn, personality quizzes. It’s the main place I look for movie news and trailers, so it’s pretty rare when I go to the theater and see a preview for something that’s not even on my radar. Such was the case many months ago when Mek and I went to see a movie (I’ve long since forgotten which one) and saw a trailer for Kingsman: The Secret Service. We turned to each other and were like, “What was that, and when do we get to watch it?”

Well, we watched it last week. And while I do have some problems with the movie, Kingsman is overall pretty damn fun.

Coming Soon-Ish: ZOMG Avengers: Age of Ultron

Okay, I just watched this trailer, like, three times in a row. I have no clinical analysis here, just squee, like all the squee. Could James Spader finally provide Marvel with a villain other than Loki who’s actually interesting? Could I love this movie even more than I love The Avengers? Can I buy this creepy ass Pinocchio song now, please?

I sincerely hope that the answer to all of these questions is yes.

Coming Soon-Ish: CAPTAIN AMERICA!

There weren’t many trailers that caught my attention this week, but I just couldn’t pass up the first preview of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. First this exchange:

Black Widow: “You doing anything fun Saturday night?”
Captain America: “Well, all the guys in my barbershop quarter are dead, so no. Not really.”

LOVE

This looks pretty good so far. I had my issues with the first Captain America, but I’m actually really excited to see this one. I’m looking forward to seeing more of Steve Rogers dealing with the 21st century, not to mention working with Black Widow for SHIELD. (I have to be shallow here and mention I kinda can’t stand Natasha’s new hair. Steve’s hair is longer than I’d expect, but I kind of like it. The Winter Soldier’s hair needs some damn work. Okay, shallow talk over.)

I’ve never really read Marvel Comics, and I’ve been trying to avoid spoilers like crazy, so I don’t have any idea who Robert Redford is playing, nor do I want to. (I mean, I guess he could just be the SHIELD head honcho he appears to be, but . . . do you really get Robert Redford for that? I suspect something else is going on.) I’m mostly mentioning it because every fiber in my being is telling me not to trust him, at least from this trailer. But I suppose that could be incorrect.

Also, the scene in the elevator? Kind of badass.

I have high hopes for The Winter Soldier. I mean, you try not to expect too much, but sometimes that’s just not possible. Here’s to hoping I like this one more than The First Avenger.

“Sorry. I Couldn’t Resist.”

So, I’m a giant Quentin Tarantino nerd. Above my desk is a Pulp Fiction poster. To my right is a Death Proof one. I have seen every feature-length film Tarantino has directed, every feature-length film he’s written, and almost everything else he’s ever been involved in, including a couple of CSI episodes AND an episode of ER. (Well, probably. Honestly, I don’t actually remember the episode that I watched over a decade ago, but it aired well before I gave up on the series, so I’m sure I saw it.)

The only thing Quentin Tarantino’s ever done that I didn’t like was Jackie Brown — which, I don’t know, I just found boring. Other than that, I’m a huge fan. Pair that up with the fact that I’m absurdly fond of revenge fantasies — which, okay, is probably one of the reasons I like Tarantino so much — and there was really never any question that I’d end up seeing Django Unchained in theater.

And the thing is, I really enjoyed this movie. I had a great time watching it, and I’ll happily buy it on DVD to add to my Tarantino collection. But . . . I don’t know that it’s as amazing of a movie as some people have been telling me.
